Welcome to The Church Rooms
About Us
We’re Joey and Jessica Moore, and The Church Rooms has been part of our family story for years. Nestled in the heart of Witheridge, this charming former schoolhouse has seen generations of village life, and we’ve lovingly restored it to be a home away from home. We designed it as somewhere we’d want to stay ourselves, somewhere for family, friends, adventure, and quiet moments alike.
A Little History
Built in 1845 as the British (Chapel) School, The Church Rooms welcomed local children in a time when education wasn’t guaranteed. Two modest rooms once echoed with the voices of over 90 pupils, a single teacher racing between lessons, and children braving frozen inkwells on winter mornings. Over the decades, the building became a cornerstone of village life, and traces of that history remain from ink stains to thick stone walls and deep window sills, reminding us of the bustling schooldays that came before.
Our Vision Today
Today, The Church Rooms is a gentle retreat, full of character and quiet charm. We’ve preserved the original features wherever we could while creating a space that’s welcoming, practical, and flexible for families or friends. Whether you’re stopping for a weekend on the Two Moors Way, exploring Dartmoor, or just wanting a peaceful escape, we hope you’ll feel the history, warmth, and care in every corner of the house.
Life in Witheridge
Witheridge is a picture-perfect Devon village, full of history and surrounded by rolling countryside. From here, you can explore charming lanes, historic buildings, and wider North Devon, from Dartmoor to the coast. For us, it’s a village we know and love, and we hope visitors come to feel a little of that too.
